Google AI Mode for service businesses: how to get recommended

Google's AI Mode and AI Overviews now answer many local searches before anyone sees the regular results. For a service company, being named in that answer is quickly becoming as important as ranking in the map pack.

What changed

Searches like "furnace not turning on what to do" or "best plumber near me open now" now often show an AI answer first. It explains the problem and suggests a few local companies. Many people call one of those names without scrolling further.

How the AI picks who to name

It pulls from your Google Business Profile, your website, reviews on Google and other sites, directories like Yelp, Angi, Nextdoor and BBB, and local news or posts. Clear, consistent and recent information wins. A company that is vague online is easy to skip.

Make your Google Business Profile complete

  • the right primary and secondary categories;
  • every service listed with a short description;
  • service area with real towns;
  • hours, including emergency hours if you offer them;
  • photos of trucks, team and real jobs;
  • posts every week or two;
  • answers to common questions in the Q&A.

Build one page per service

A single "Services" page with a list is not enough. Create a page for each main service, such as furnace repair, water heater replacement or move-out cleaning, explaining what is included, typical price range, how fast you can come and which towns you cover. The AI looks for pages that answer a specific question.

Ask for reviews that describe the job

"Fast and friendly" is nice. "Replaced our water heater in Plano the same day and hauled the old one away" is far more useful, because it names the service, the town and the result. Send the review link right after the job and ask the customer to mention what you did.

Answer the questions people ask

Add an FAQ to each service page: how much it costs, how long it takes, whether you are licensed and insured, whether you offer financing or a warranty, and what to do before the technician arrives. These are the exact questions people type into AI tools.

Be consistent everywhere

Same business name, phone number and address or service area on Google, your site, Yelp, Angi, Nextdoor, Facebook and BBB. Mismatched details make the AI less confident that the listings are the same company.

A quick example

An HVAC company in Ohio had one services page and about 40 reviews. It created eight service pages with prices and FAQs, cleaned up its directory listings and started asking for detailed reviews. Within four months it began appearing in AI answers for "furnace repair" in its two main towns, and calls from Google grew noticeably during the first cold week.

Check if you show up

Once a month, search your main services plus your town in Google AI Mode, ChatGPT and Gemini. Note which companies appear and what they have that you do not: more reviews, clearer pages, more photos. Then close the gap.

Common mistakes

Leaving the profile untouched for months, having a website with no real text, using different names on different sites, buying fake reviews and assuming ads alone will keep the phone ringing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to be recommended in Google AI Mode?

Not directly. Ads can appear next to AI answers, but the recommendation itself comes from what Google finds about your business: profile, website, reviews and other sites. The work that helps is the same work that builds trust with customers.
