Planning a crane day

Setting trusses, beams, HVAC units or modules with a crane can save days of work. It only works when everything is ready before the crane arrives.

The lift plan

List every pick: weight, distance, height and order. The crane company uses it to choose the crane.

Crane size and access

Confirm the road, gates and turning space for the crane and the delivery trucks.

Ground conditions

Soft or backfilled ground under the outriggers is a risk. Use mats and check with the crane operator.

Utilities and overhead lines

Mark underground utilities and keep a safe distance from power lines. Call the utility if needed.

Deliveries in order

Materials arrive in the order they will be lifted. Nothing worse than the first truss under the last pallet.

Crew roles

One signal person, tag line handlers and a clear plan for who is where.

Weather

Wind limits lifts. Watch the forecast and have a backup date.

Common mistakes

Booking the crane before the site is ready, no lift plan and deliveries arriving late.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should a crane be booked?

Book as soon as the date is reasonably firm, often two to four weeks ahead, and confirm a few days before. In busy seasons the crane company may need even more notice.
